Flexible and Focused Therapy!
You shouldn’t have to justify your need for care or squeeze your healing into an insurance company’s (…or anyone’s…) timeline. Private pay therapy allows us to work collaboratively and creatively — without waiting on approvals or navigating red tape. The result?
No Insurance Approval Necessary.
Control of Your Mental Health.
In-Network Vs. Private Pay
Licensed Professionals will often have the choice to sign contractual agreements with various insurance companies. Generally speaking, if the provider agrees to these contracts, they are considered an “In-Network Provider.” If they choose to not sign the contracts they are considered an “Out-of-Network Provider” (or a “Private Pay” Provider).
In these provider contracts there are specific details (i.e. clauses, specific procedures, reimbursement rate schedules, restrictions, etc) the insurance company requires the Provider to comply with, or agree to, in order to remain “In-Network.” The discussion surrounding these contracts is lengthly and very detailed. In short, in regard to mental health, the contractual details can interfere with therapeutic care in various ways. Thus, there are numerous benefits to working with an Out-of-Network/Private Pay Therapist.
Benefits of a Private Pay Therapist:
-
When you use insurance, you're required to have a formal mental health diagnosis for therapy to be covered. With private pay, you can get support without being labeled or pathologized. Whether you're here for healing, growth, or self-discovery, you're welcome as you are.
-
Private pay therapy keeps your information between us. No diagnostic codes, no medical records, no third-party access to your personal mental health history…. What you share in therapy stays in therapy.
-
Insurance often limits how many sessions you can have, how frequently you can be seen, or what types of therapy are “allowed.” In private pay therapy, your treatment is guided by your goals and needs—not by red tape or rigid protocols.
-
Healing from trauma, managing anxiety, or shifting long-standing patterns takes time. Private pay therapy allows you to go beyond symptom management and into the deeper work that leads to real transformation.
-
Instead of being restricted to an insurance provider list, you can choose a therapist based on fit, experience, and style. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is the biggest predictor of success—so finding someone you connect with truly matters.
-
You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many of my clients are high-functioning individuals who want to deepen their self-awareness, improve their relationships, or live more meaningfully. These growth-oriented goals are not often covered by insurance — but they’re central to therapy.
-
Private pay means no denied claims, no waiting on reimbursements, and no surprise bills. You know what you're paying and what you're getting. Simple, transparent, and stress-free.
-
Most insurance plans don’t cover couples or family therapy unless one individual is diagnosed with a mental health condition. Even then, there can be additional restrictions.
In private therapy, we focus on what really matters — your connection, communication, and healing as a couple or growth as a family — without needing a pathological workaround.
-
Because I don’t work with insurance, I keep a smaller caseload. That allows me to show up more present, engaged, and prepared for each session—offering you the thoughtful, attentive care you deserve.
Common Questions:
-
Individual Therapy appointments are $175.
Couples Therapy appointments are $200.
These rates are reflective of my training, expertise, and energy devoted (during and after your session) to supporting you in meeting your goals.
(Longer sessions are pro-rated off of these base amounts for the time needed).
-
The overall duration of therapy depends on your specific goals and needs. Some clients find resolution in a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll regularly review your progress together, ensuring therapy remains effective and aligned with your objectives.
-
Generally, therapy appointments are about 50-55 minutes. This is widely considered as the “Therapeutic Hour.” Sometimes appointments can be longer or shorter depending on your needs or desires.
If longer or shorter sessions interest you, we would simply discuss these details, coordinate, and plan accordingly ahead of time.
-
I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. I highly encourage client’s to communicate any family and/or work emergencies, childcare issues, or illnesses that may arise. I will do my best to reschedule if possible. However, if rescheduling within the same week is not possible, since the appointment time has been reserved for the client, any session canceled within 24 hours of the appointment time, will be charged the full session fee.
-
In many cases, yes. If you have out-of-network benefits, your insurance company may reimburse you for a portion of your therapy costs. This means you pay me directly at the time of your appointment, and then submit a claim to your insurance company for possible partial reimbursement.
The amount you’re reimbursed depends on your individual plan, whether you’ve met your deductible, and your insurance company’s out-of-network coverage rate.
-
Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask:
Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
Is therapy with Nicolais Cuyle, LCPC covered?
What is my out-of-network deductible, and has any of it been met?
What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed after the deductible is met?
Are there any limitations (number of sessions, types of therapy, etc.)?
How do I submit a superbill, and how long does reimbursement take?
-
A Superbill is a detailed receipt I provide to you that includes the information your insurance company needs to process your claim. It includes things like:
My practice information and credentials.
Session dates and fees paid.
Diagnosis code.
CPT code (service code for the type of therapy provided).
-
Most insurance companies require a diagnosis in order to reimburse for therapy — even out-of-network. If you want to pursue reimbursement, I can provide a diagnosis that reflects what you're experiencing.
That said, if you prefer not to use a diagnosis, you always have the option to keep your therapy fully private and not involve insurance at all.
-
Some plans don’t cover out-of-network mental health care. If that’s the case, therapy would be an out-of-pocket expense.
However, many clients still find it to be a deeply worthwhile investment in their long-term well-being. If needed, we can also talk about session frequency or other ways to make therapy sustainable for you.
-
Yes! Therapy is typically considered an eligible medical expense under Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). You can often use your HSA/FSA debit card or submit your session receipts for reimbursement.
